FSS-01 TOUR, OLD STATE HOUSE - at Old State House
Sally Whipple, Driector of Education and Community Programming, Old State House * September 22nd, 2010. * 1:00 PM-3:00 PM

Our program will include a full tour of the building and a special presentation of Purdence Crandall, including a 22 minute video describing her experiences and their effect on Connecticut Black Law, which outlawed the teaching of out-of-state African Americans in Connecticut. This will be followed by a discussion of Prudence Crandall, led by a knowledgeable person playing her part. There is a $5.00 admission fee.
FSS-02 THE PROBATE COURT SYSTEM

Hartford Courant Columnist Rick Green has been following both the abuses of the Connecticut Probate Courts and the various proposals to reform these courts that play such an important role in our society and particularly affect the elderly. He will bring us up to date on developments and answer your questions.
FSS-03 THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR: IT'S MARITIME HISTORY

The presenter, a retired professor of dentistry from the UConn Health Center and author of several books and articles on maritime history, will discuss aspects of the Revolutionary War from the standpoint of the continental navy.
FSS-04 HAITI
Leslie G. Desmangles, Ph.D., Presenter * September 23rd, 2010. * 1:15 PM-2:45 PM

Professor Desmangles, a Haitian-born anthropologist teaching at Trinity College who has relatives in Haiti and has been closely following developments there since the earthquake, will speak about the history of Haiti, the latest developments there, and its prospects for the future.
FSS-05 TOUR, DINOSAUR STATE PARK - Rocky Hill, CT

Dinosaur State Park features 600 early Jurassic dinosaur footprints on display, along with exhibits, a bookstore and Discovery Room. Visitors can watch a Park film, hear a track talk, walk the Park's trails, have a picnic(no food allowed inside the museum), and shop in the bookstore. Connecticut residents 65 and over can get a Charter Oak Pass which entitles them to free admission at Dinosaur and other state parks. Bring a picture ID to verify that you meet the age and residency requirements. Admission is $10.00 for non-pass holders.
FSS-06 THE HUTTERITES: A STUDY IN CULTURAL SURVIVAL
Prof. Michael Park, Presenter * October 14th, 2010. * 10:00 AM-12:00 PM

The presenter, who heads the Anthropology Department at Central Connecticut State University, will discuss the Hutterites, who have successfully delt with 480 years of hardship and still thrive as a people and maintain their way of life, and suggests ways in which they may have managed this; he will also discuss their porpuation dynamics and what they tell us about processes of microevolution in humans.
FSS-07 TOUR, THE HARTFORD COURANT - 285 Broad St., Hartford, CT

We will have a guided tour of the facilities of the Hartford Courant and Fox 61 News and Weather studios at 285 Broad Street Hartford. Parking will be available in designated lots but attendees must notify the ALP office (860)570-9070)by October 4 to reserve a parking space. Car pooling is highly recommended.
FSS-08 THE GREATER HARTFORD CLEAN WATER PROJECT
Michael Mancini and Julie McLaughlin, Presenters * October 21st, 2010. * 10:00 AM-12:00 PM

The presenters, who are from the MDC, will give an update on plans and progress to date on the 20-year, $2 billion project to eliminate sewer and storm water overflow into the Connecticut River basin system.
FSS-09 CONNECTICUT CONCERT OPERA
John Wadhams and Doris Lang Kosloff, Presenters * October 25th, 2010. * 1:00 PM-3:00 PM

Giacomo Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" will be performed by Connecticut Concert Opera on October 30, 2010 at St. Joseph College's Hoffman Auditorium. The presenters will discuss the opera and play selected excerpts.
FSS-10 METAL SCULPUTRE - at Duncaster
Hans Stargardter, Presenter * November 23rd, 2010. * 1:00 PM-3:00 PM

The presenter turns sheet metal into representational and abstract sculptures, including anticlassic shapes. He has studied with masters of pewter Frances Felton and Heikki Seppa, and his sculptures are in silver, puter, and some jewelry in gold.
FSS-11 THE SCIENCE OF EYEWITNESS IDENTIFICATION
Judge David Borden, Presenter * December 6th, 2010. * 1:00 PM-3:00 PM

The presenter, a retired Connecticut Supreme Court justice will present the science of eyewitness identification that has developed over the past 30+ years, explain how it differs from the procedures typically used by law enforcement in Connecticut and elsewhere, refer to those jurisdictions that do recognize the science, and made recommendations for reforms.
FSS-12 CHRISTIAN-MUSLIM RELATIONS
Dr. Mahmoud Ayoub, Presenter * December 7th, 2010. * 9:00 AM-10:30 AM

The presenter, a faculty associate in Shite Islam and Christian Muslim Relations at the Hartford Seminary, will talk to us on Christian Muslim relations using as his theme love of God and love of neighbor in the two traditions.
FSS-13 MORAL MACHINES; TEACHING ROBOTS RIGHT FROM WRONG
Wendell Wallach, Ph.D., Presenter * December 7th, 2010. * 10:45 AM-12:15 PM

The presenter, a consultant, ethicist, and scholar at Yale's Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics, will discuss the possibility of programming computers with moral decision-making capabilities. How might one approach the task? Do we want computers making moral decisions?
FSS-14 AMISTAD
Robert Wolff, Presenter * December 7th, 2010. * 1:15 PM-2:45 PM

The presenter, Associate Professor of History at Central Connecticut State University, will tell us about the Amistad affair, utilizing recent research and new insights. He will show film clips, other images, and more.
FSS-15 CORRECTIONS
Doug J. Kulmacz, Presenter * December 14th, 2010. * 1:00 PM-3:00 PM

The Presenter, who is Director of Volunteer Services in Connecticut Department of Correction, will discuss the idea of correction and its history, the root causes of crime, the role of government, the Criminal Justice Triangle, and modern corrections, as well as opportunities of volunteering.
